GIIS EAST COAST MUN 2023
Committees
Our Model United Nations conference features diverse committees, each tackling unique global issues. From Security Council to Human Rights, these dynamic committees promise engaging debates and meaningful resolutions.

Beginner
ECOSOC
ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council) is the organ of the UN that deals with economic issues throughout the world and their social implications. With rising globalisation, brain drain has become a pressing concern for most of the world’s economies, and it is considered to be caused in part and exacerbated by unemployment - which is the problem ECOSOC delegates must address, considering all aspects of the issue and coming up with a satisfactory solution.

Beginner
UNHRC
The United Nations Human Rights Council is the international body in charge of maintaining the basic rights of humans anywhere in the world and ensuring countries adhere to these. Refugee crises, however, are a persistent thorn that prevents humans from obtaining the rights they are entitled to by previous UNHRC resolutions. Internal displacement is a key aspect of this, and so the UNHRC member states must consider new perspectives and debate to come up with a resolution to this issue.

Intermediate
WHA
The WHA, short for the World Health Assembly, is, as the name suggests, a council tasked with discussing developments and issues in the worldwide maintenance of human health and medical well-being. All member countries were adversely affected by COVID-19, which has taught some important lessons to all nations. The WHA must discuss the implications of the pandemic that changed the world and lessons to be drawn from it, and how it can be ensured that such a global catastrophe never again occurs.

Intermediate
NATO
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO, for short aims to “guarantee the freedom and security of its members through political and military means”. Its members include the United States of America and several Western European nations, such as the United Kingdom and France. Three member states have nuclear capabilities, and allowing Ukraine into NATO may result in the use of these weapons against Russia, another nuclear weapon state. NATO needs to debate quickly and find the best possible course of action to both assist Ukraine and prevent large-scale nuclear conflict.

Advanced
FUNSC
The Futuristic United Nations Security Council is a simulation of one of the most important UN organs set well into the future. The FUNSC retains the same powers as the current UNSC, most importantly the five veto countries and the ability to pass legally binding resolutions. In this simulation of the future, the exploitation of AI to aid cybercrime has become rampant, and the member states of the UNSC are required to find a solution to cybersecurity threats posed by AI.

Special
IPC
The International Press Corps plays a key role in the documentation and broadcasting of the proceedings and results of debates in various committees. They are required to not only draft press releases but also engage in intensive press conferences with member states of various committees.
